AACE Pakistan chapter CME 2016, held at POF Hotel, Wah Cantt on Tuesday, October 25th 2016. This activity was approved for 2 credit hours: certificates were given to participants immediately after the conclusion of the CME activity.

Dr Syed Asad Ali (President, PAFP Taxila, Wah Cantt, Hassan Abdal) chaired the session. More than 150 Family Physicians, Medical Specialist and Consultants from Taxila ,Wah Cantt and Hassan Abdal attended the program The program started around 7:00 pm with the recitation from the Holy Quran by Hafiz Irfan. Afterwards the Moderator introduced and invited chairperson and speakers to take their seat on the stage.

Colonel Dr. Shahid Ahmed, Consultant Endocrinologist and Head, Department of Endocrinology, MH Rawalpindi presented his talk titled "Evaluation of Thyroid Nodule". He discussed the role of investigations including thyroid ultrasound and FNA-C in diagnosis of thyroid neoplasms.

Dr Osama Ishtiaq, Consultant Endocrinologist, Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad gave a presentation titled "Approach to patient with Male Infertility". His talk provided a simple road map to how to perform diagnostic work up without creating untoward anxiety or raise unrealistic expectations among the couple.

Prof Dr. Ali Jawa, Head and professor of endocrinology, Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, discussed "Recent advances in the management of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus" His talk also discussed the emerging role of stem cell transplantation for treatment of type 2 diabetes and he shared local data including preliminary trial results at Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Islamabad with the audience .

Question Answers session was well addressed by the honorable speakers.

The Moderator appreciated the audience for their active and responsive presence.

On behalf of Pakistan Endocrine Society, Prof Dr Ali Jawa thanked the audience for providing the opportunity to share knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of common endocrine disorders. The 4th Punjab chapter CME of the Pakistan Endocrine Society in Collaboration with AACE (Pakistan Chapter) Held at Hotel Desert Plam Rahim Yar Khan on 29th September, 2016

The CME was attended by more than 200 Family Physicians from Rahim Yar Khan, Ghotki, Sukkur, Panu Aqil, Dherki and Sadiqabad.

Welcome and Introduction

Dr Babar Hasnain and Dr Shahida Tarar, chairs of the meeting was introduced by Prof Ali Jawa. He then welcomed the audience and share the objectives of the meeting which were:
1-    Review the new advancements in the management of Hypothyroidism
2-    New advancements in T2DM management
3-     Evaluation and Management of Female infertility


Dr Amna Riaz gave her talk with overview of basic physiology of thyroid gland, followed by the etiology, symptoms, signs, lab tests and management of hypothyroidism. Management consideration in special situations such as pregnancy and subclinical hypothyroidism were discussed.

Dr Sadia Salman provided an overview of available diagnostic options and treatment regimens for type 2 diabetes management. In addition to pharmacological treatment, she highlighted the role of lifestyle modifications including regular exercise as part of healthy living.


Prof Ali Jawa initiated his talk by broadly discussing the causes of infertility in females. After a broad overview, he further elaborated upon the endocrine aspect of female infertility and management considerations.


Question Answers were addressed by respective speakers at the end of the CME activity.


Dr Babar Husnain and Dr Shahida Tarar thanked all the speakers and audience.  Dr Babar was highly appreciative of the Pakistan Endocrine Society's initiative to conduct CME activities in smaller cities such as  Gujrat. With full PMDC-approved CME accreditation, this was an ideal opportunity for family physicians to learn fr experts literally at their doorsteps.


Dr Shahid Tarar, on behalf of gynecologists, thanked the speakers for taking the time to impart learning to all. She was especially appreciative of the extra efforts made by the speakers to specifically highlight endocrine diseases from a gynecologist's perspective as well. She requested Pakistan Endocrine Society to hold a special symposium on infertility in Gujrat.


Dr Mahfooz, Senior Family Physician and active member of Pakistan Medical Association Gujrat City, gave away shields to speakers and chairpersons for the session.

Dr Ali Jawa thanked the audience for their active and enthiusiastic participation. He also was appreciative of Abbott laboratories for sponsoring the activity. He took the opportunity to apprise the participants of the upcoming PES mid summer meeting May 13th, 14th and 15th at Muzaffarabad, followed by annual event in Islamabad on November 18th, 19th and 20th. Afterwards the meeting was adjourned.

Prof Khurshid Khan initiated his talk with overview of basic physiology of hyperthyroidism, followed by the etiology, symptoms, signs, lab tests and management regimen available. Management consideration in special situations such as pregnancy and subclinical hyperthyroidism were very described in detail.

Prof Ali Jawa discussed the causes of infertility in males. After a broad overview, he further elaborated upon the endocrine aspect of male infertility and management considerations.
Dr Fawad Ahmad Randhawa discussed the causes, evaluation and management considerations of female infertility. He was able to very elegantly dispel common misconceptions among the family physicians regarding PCOS.

Dr Imran Hassan Khan provided the overview of available treatment regimens for type-2 diabetes management. His talk was very well received by the audience owing to his unique style of blending local concerns with global recommendations.

Dr Altaf Cheema, Vice President of Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians,  shared his views on behalf of the family physicians. He was very much appreciative of all the speakers who shared a very precise and concise talk on 4 practical topics.

Meeting Summary

Welcome and Introduction Prof.Dr Javed Akram, chair of the meeting was introduced by Prof Ali Jawa. He then welcomed the audience and share the objectives of the meeting which were: 1- Review the new advancements in the management of Hypothyroidism 2- Evaluation and Management of Short stature 3- New Advancements in T2DM management.

Dr Osama started very brilliantly from the basic physiology of Hypothyroidism and shared the etiology of hypothyroidism, symptoms, signs and lab tests and management regimen available. Management consideration in special situations such as pregnancy and subclinical hypothyroidism were very well explained. He concluded his talk regarding its management saying, ”Start Low and Go Slow”.

Dr Ali Jawa provided the overview of available treatment regimens for type-2 diabetes management. He discussed the pathophysiology of type-2 diabetes, traditional antihyperglycemic therapy, new advancements like, DPP4i, GLP-1 RAs and SGLT-2 as well as mechanisms of action, merits and de-merits of these agents. Insulins with all available formulation types for individualization were also discussed. He emphasized more on the importance and added benefits with GLP-1Ras in these patients. His concluding statement that was very well received by the audience was ”Insulin Resistance doesn't lie in fat and muscles of the patient but in the mind of the doctor”.

Colonel Dr Shahid Ahmed started the talk with the definition of short stature with measurements, growth charts and its importance for both the boys/girls, rationale behind focusing on history and parental heights, monitoring of growth pattern specially in 1st year, causes of SGA and Lab investigations, GH provocation tests, and treatment of of GH Deficiency. Question Answers well well addressed by the honorable speakers.

Dr Manzoor Ahmed President of Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians Rawalpindi Chapter,  gave his concluding thoughts. He was very much appreciative of all the speakers who shared a very precise and concise talk on 3-most essential topics. He moreover appreciated the enthusiastic efforts of Dr Ali Jawa as he is been arranging such learning CMEs sessions for the GPs right after his joining in PIMS and they look forward for the same interactive talks in future as well.

Prof Dr Javed Akram thanked all the speakers and the sponsoring company Novo Nordisk and particularly Dr Osama Ishtiaq and Prof Dr Ali Jawa for being at forefront in academic activities. He further added that:

1- Dr Osama had very thoughtfully highlighted the importance of hypothyroidism. He opined that its particularly rewarding to treat these patients early because if you delay, you cannot recover the time lost. So earlier the diagnosis and its timely management, the better.

2- In a brief time, Dr Ali Jawa beautifully shared what is and what will be available for the management of type-2 diabetes patients, specifically highlighting the weight loss benefits of certain regimens. As Dr Ali said, we need to look for every aspect of this disease being a metabolic disorder to improve patient’s quality of life.

3- Last but not the least, Dr Shahid very succinctly shared the value and importance of work up of short stature patients and time tested role of GH treatment. Indeed, our Family Physicians, who are at the forefront, need to be able to identify and refer as needed patients with short stature to endocrinologists. Dr Ali Jawa thanked the audience for their active and enthiusiastic particpation and the meeting was adjourned.

The Annual International Conference FAMILYCON, organized by the Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians took place from 12th February to the 14th February 2016 at the Pearl Continental

The Annual International Conference FAMILYCON, organized by the Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians took place from 12th February to the 14th February 2016 at the Pearl Continental Hotel in Lahore, Pakistan. The conference covered areas like To lend the hands of the government in various health programs like T.B DOTS, Family planning, Immunization and polio eradication programs etc. AACE had a collaborative session with Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians on Diabetes mellitus. This was a half-day Session with workshop on managing Diabetes and case based learning sessions. These workshop were run by Dr. Abbas Raza, Dr. Ali Jawa, Dr. Imtiaz, Dr. Amna and Dr. Khursheed Khan. This was followed by state of Art lectures by Prof A. Samad Shera, Honorary President, International Diabetes Federation (IDF), Head, WHO Collaborating Centre for Diabetes and Member, WHO International Expert Advisory Panel on Diabetes

Joint PES and AACE Pakistan Chapter 3rd Punjab CME in Lahore on Saturday, October 03, 2015

I am pleased to share the report of the joint PES-AACE Pakistan Chapter 3rd Punjab CME of 2015 at Lahore on Friday, October 3rd, 2015. The CME was accredited for 3 PMDC-approved CME contact hours by Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, PIMS, Islamabad. The event was attended by 250+ General Physician's.

Prof Ali Jawa opened the ceremony by introducing Pakistan Endocrine Society and AACE Pakistan chapter to the General Physicians. He introduced Dr Uzma Malik, the moderator for the event.

Dr Uzma Malik introduced all speakers prior to their respective lectures. Prof Khurshid Khan spoke on the topic of "management of hypothyroidism". His talk was geared towards newer diagnostic and treatment options.

Dr Imtiaz Hassan apprised the audience of "Recent updates in management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus" He touched upon the newer therapies including Degludec, Peglyspro and SGLT-2 inhibitors.

Prof A H Aamir discussed the "Pakistani Guidelines of Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus". His talk was well received and appreciated by the audience.

Prof Ali Jawa spoke on "Approach to patient with abnormal calcium levels. He discussed the initial and comprehensive diagnostic testing protocols in the context of available resources in Pakistan.

Audience were given the opportunity to ask questions after each presentation. Mementos were presented to each speaker as a token of appreciation. Dr Uzma Malik thanked the sponsors and the audience and the event was adjourned

1st Regional joint PES-AACE Pakistan Chapter Continuing Medical Education Session in Multan, Pakistan on May 02, 2015

The first joint PES-American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Pakistan Chapter regional CME Punjab held on 02 May, 2015 at Ramada Hotel, Multan. This three hour session was approved by PMDC through University of Health Sciences, Lahore for CME credits and attended by more than 375 general physicians with active participation and deliberation.

After Tilawat-e-Quran, Dr Saeed A Mahar, President Pakistan Endocrine Society addressed the audience and apprised them of the mission and vision of PES. He informed the audience of PES's whole year planned regional, mid-summer and annual CMEs. He congratulated the Punjab Chapter of PES for mobilizing General Physicians in such large numbers. He also highlighted that this was the first CME jointly held with AACE Pakistan Chapter and promised many such high quality CMEs in days yet to come. He strongly urged the audience to register for the upcoming mid-summer Endocrine update summit being held May 29-31, 2015 at Bhurban, accredited for 4 PMDC approved CMEs by University of Health Sciences, Lahore. With 6 international speakers and a lively scientific program, the mid-summer is bound to be of interest to general physicians and endocrinologists alike.

Subsequently, Dr S Abbas Raza, President AACE Pakistan Chapter shared the aims and objectives of the newly formed AACE Pakistan chapter and its commitment to serve as advisory body to PES. He also mentioned that AACE Pakistan chapter provides a unique opportunity to link PES to the global endocrine community. He envisioned a strong and productive collaboration between PES and AACE Pakistan Chapter. He also informed the audience about the AACE Symposium being held at the mid-summer Endocrine Updates with international speakers and topics including international AACE guidelines and updates.

- Dr. Saeed A Mahar, begins the session with a very comprehensive talk on "Management of diabetes mellitus with newer therapies". While talking on the topic, he has highlighted new therapies which can be used in management of diabetes mellitus more effectively and efficiently. - This was followed by a very interesting and enlightening talk by Dr Ali Jawa titled "Evaluation of a child with short stature". Audience were provided with growth charts and guided on how to plot correctly and interprete results.

- Finally,Dr. Faisal Masood Qureshi held a talk on "Andropause" with all the latest updates and recommendations about accurate diagnosis and management of Andropause.

Afterwards, a very lively Question and Answer session was held with audience given the opportunity to ask questions to the experts.

- In the end, Professor Ijaz Hussain Malik, HOD Medicine Nishtar Hospital, Multan gave his closing remarks. He appreciated the efforts of Pakistan Endocrine Society in holding regular CMEs at Multan. He was of the opinion that these periodic CMEs in Punjab is a good omen and has helped raised the standard of care among the general physicians. He was very appreciative of the accreditation of PMDC approved CME through UHS and urged PES to hold many more such events.

- Prof Ijaz H Malik presented mementos to all the speakers. Prof Abdul Hameed in turn presented a token of appreciation to the Chief Guest on behalf of PES and AACE Pakistan Chapter

- All the participants highly appreciated the content of the program with all the latest updates and new techniques to manage their patients with varying complications. PES committee also shared their upcoming programs and cordially invited all participants to attend these mega events.

AACE Pakistan Chapter CME on TeCOS trial on June 15th, 2015 at Pearl Continental Hotel, Peshawar

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Pakistan chapter has recently launched the Trial Evaluating Cardiovascular Outcomes in Sitagliptin (TECOS) in a series of nationwide scientific programs. The programs were drafted by Prof Dr Abbas Raza, who is also the founding president of AACE, Pakistan chapter.

The scientific programs, which were planned in collaboration with OBS Pakistan, were conducted in Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar.

The program in Peshawar was conducted at the Pearl Continental Hotel on June 15, 2015, and was moderated by Dr Sheeraz Khan, who is a consultant endocrinologist at Rahman Medical Complex, Peshawar. The speaker at the event was Dr Khalid Usman, who is Associate Professor of Endocrinology at Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar. While, speaking at the event, Dr Khalid Usman said that the questions over the cardiovascular safety of Sitagliptin have been answered by the TECOS trial.

During each of the scientific sessions, the speakers highlighted the key findings of the landmark TECOS trial. They said that this trial has proven the cardiovascular safety of Sitagliptin, and they shall now prescribe Sitagliptin with more confidence.

AACE Pakistan chapter plans to hold more of such high quality scientific and academic programs in the near future.

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Pakistan chapter has recently launched the Trial Evaluating Cardiovascular Outcomes in Sitagliptin (TECOS) in a series of nationwide scientific programs. The programs were drafted by Prof Dr Abbas Raza, who is also the founding president of AACE, Pakistan chapter.

The scientific programs, which were planned in collaboration with OBS Pakistan, were conducted in Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar.

The program in Lahore was presided by Dr Imtiaz Hasan, who is the Medical Director at the Diabetes Institute of Pakistan. The speaker for the program was Prof Dr Khurshid Khan, who is the Professor of Endocrinology at Jinnah Hospital, Lahore. The program in Lahore was moderated by Dr Fawad Ahmad Randhawa, who is a consultant endocrinologist.

While, speaking during the program, Dr Khurshid Khan elaborated the details of the TECOS trial, labeling it as a landmark study. Answering to a question from the audience on cardiovascular safety and benefit, Prof Dr Khurshid said that TECOS was a cardiovascular safety study where comparison of Sitagliptin was done with a placebo to study the rates of heart failure and mortality.

During each of the scientific sessions, the speakers highlighted the key findings of the landmark TECOS trial. They said that this trial has proven the cardiovascular safety of Sitagliptin, and they shall now prescribe Sitagliptin with more confidence.

AACE Pakistan Chapter CME on TeCOS trial on June 17th, 2015 at Marriott Hotel, Islamabad

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Pakistan chapter has recently launched the Trial Evaluating Cardiovascular Outcomes in Sitagliptin (TECOS) in a series of nationwide scientific programs. The programs were drafted by Prof Dr Abbas Raza, who is also the founding president of AACE, Pakistan chapter.

The scientific programs, which were planned in collaboration with OBS Pakistan, were conducted in Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar.

The AACE Pakistan Chapter held a Continuing Medical Education activity on TeCOS trial on June 17th, 2015 in the afternoon at Marriott Hotel, Islamabad. TeCOS (Trial Evaluating Cardiovascular Outcomes with Sitagliptin) results were announced during the American Diabetes Association meeting in June 2015. This CME was attended by 50+ doctors.

Prof Dr. Ali Jawa, chairperson for the event, gave a brief overview of AACE Pakistan Chapter with a very comprehensive note on its aims and objectives. He also encouraged the participants to attend the upcoming PES meeting in Karachi in November, 2015. He also shared the recently launched initiative of AACE Pakistan Chapter's poster session in collaboration with Pakistan Endocrine Society.

Prof Dr. Jamal Zafar presented the results of the TeCOS trial in detail. Afterwards, audience was given the opportunity to ask questions which are answered and addressed by worthy speaker.

At the conclusion of the session, Prof Dr. Ali Jawa obliged the audience for their active participation. He also appreciated support by OBS pharma in organizing the CME in the interest of medical education and awareness.

AACE Pakistan Chapter Collaborative meeting with Pakistan Academy of Family Physicians at Mid Summer FamilyCon 2015

Pakistan Chapter of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists held a meeting in collaboration with Pakistan Academy of Family Physician's Mid-summer conference. The Mid- summer FamilyCon was held on Sunday July 26, 2015 at Ramada Inn, Islamabad. More than 450 general physicians from all over Pakistan attended the event. Prof Ali Jawa, Dr Osama Ishtiaq and Prof Jamal Zafar addressed the audience during the cardio metabolic seminar.

Prof Ali Jawa apprised the audience of the goals and objective of establishing Pakistan Chapter of American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists. On behalf of the president, he pledged faculty support to PAFP for CME activities. During his presentation titled "Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus- Evidence based approach to management", Prof Ali Jawa discussed the recent AACE guidelines in the management of diabetes. He elaborated upon the role of modern anti-diabetic agents such as SGLT-2 inhibitors and Degludec in the management of diabetes. He advised the GPs to keep the anti diabetic medication/side effect grid published by AACE on their table for ready reference.

Prof Jamal Zafar in his presentation "Insulin management in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus" discussed the pharmacokinetics and clinical uses of various pre-mixed and free-mix insulin. He encouraged the general physicians to be confident in using the right insulin for the right patient. He cautioned GPs against using TZDs and insulin together especially in high risk patients.

Dr Osama Ishtiaq appraised the GPs of "Updates in Hypothyroidism" management. His talk was particularly well received by GPs for being relevant, concise and to the point. His talk emphasized the effects of suboptimal thyroxin replacement before, during and after pregnancy and the need to address it adequately.

Prof Muhammad Aslam, Vice Chancellor, University of Health Sciences, Lahore who was also the guest of honor for the occasion, was very appreciative of the contribution of AACE Pakistan Chapter. He encouraged GPs to continue to collaborate with AACE Pakistan chapter in future CME events as well. Prof Ali Jawa thanked the PAFP for the opportunity and reiterated AACE support in CME program.

Joint PES-AACE Pakistan Chapter 2nd CME Punjab region at Jhelum on Wednesday, August 05, 2015

I am happy to report the proceedings of the second joint PES-American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) Pakistan Chapter regional CME Punjab held on 05 August, 2015 at Tulip Inn, Jhelum. This three hour session was approved by PMDC through Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University, Islamabad for One CME credit hour and attended by more than 250 general physicians, despite a heavy rain pour. Dr Hafeez ur Rehman, President PMA Jhelum, was the guest of honor for the CME activity.

After Tilawat-e-Quran, Prof Ali Jawa, Vice President (Punjab) Pakistan Endocrine Society addressed the audience and apprised them of the mission and vision of PES. He informed the audience of PES's whole year planned regional activities as well as recently held mid-summer meeting at Bhurban. He also invited all to attend the annual meeting of PES being held at Karachi in December this year. He also highlighted that this was the second CME jointly held with AACE Pakistan Chapter with many more in the future. He also informed all about the newly formed AACE Pakistan chapter and its commitment to serve as advisory body to PES. He also mentioned that AACE Pakistan chapter provides a unique opportunity to link PES to the Global endocrine community. He envisioned a strong and productive collaboration between PES and AACE Pakistan Chapter.

- Prof Ali Jawa gave an exhaustive talk titled "Evaluation and management of a child with short stature". Audience were provided with growth charts and guided on how to plot correctly and interpret results. He also shared the results of a recently conducted research detailing the underlying etiology of short stature in children belonging to middle socioeconomic class.

- Prof Jamal Zafar, began the session with a very comprehensive talk on "Management of diabetes mellitus with newer therapies". While talking on the topic, he has highlighted new therapies which can be used in management of diabetes mellitus more effectively and efficiently. He also discussed the results of recently released TECOS trial.

- Finally, Dr. Sarwar Malik gave a talk on management of hypothyroidism. His talk was targeted at the GPs viz-a-viz evidence based optimal approach to management of hypothyroidism. He also apprised of availability of high quality levothyroxine formulation in 5 different doses by a reputable pharmaceutical company in Pakistan.

- Afterwards, a very lively Question and Answer session was held with audience given the opportunity to ask questions to the experts.

- In the end, Dr Hafeez ur Rehman, President PMA Jhelum, gave his closing remarks. He appreciated the efforts of Pakistan Endocrine Society in holding regular CMEs at Jhelum. He opined that this was the task of the government of the Punjab to provide facilities of free CME at district if not tehsil level prior to making PMDC approved CMEs mandatory. He was highly appreciative of these periodic CMEs conducted under the aegis of PES in Punjab. He firmly believed that these CMEs helped raise the standard of care among the general physicians. He was very appreciative of the accreditation of PMDC approved CME through SZABMU and urged PES to hold many more such events.

- Dr Hafeez Ur Rehman President (PMA Jhelum) and Dr Tariq Azeem (General secretary PMA Jhelum) and Dr Zafar (Past president) presented mementos to all the speakers. Prof Ali Jawa thanked the audience and cordially invited all participants to attend future CMEs.
